Seasoned travelers are forever in search of s new experience in an untouched paradise with modern conveniences close at hand. That’s why Nevis is popping up on so many todo lists this year.

Nevis is a twin. That is, she and her sister isle make up the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, also called the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis. These two have the longest history of European settlers, so they are sometimes called the “Mothers of the Leeward Islands.” The two together are the only federal two-island nation in the West Indies and Nevis by herself wins the prize as the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, according to both area and population.

Charlestown, the capitol, remains a sleepy mid-Victorian Caribbean town and quite a far cry from bustling tourist cities of nearby Caribbean islands. It is here that fans of the $10 bill will be delighted to tour the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, America’s first Secretary of the Treasury.

For fans of luxury, some of the Caribbean’s top luxury resorts and boutique hotels can be found on this undiscovered gem. Development has not overwhelmed this pristine island, so several beaches stretch for miles almost completely undisturbed. The longest beach is certainly Pinney's Beach which rambles for two miles of natural surf on the Western coast. On the other side, the windward side known for its soft trade winds, offers unrivaled, nearly deserted beaches ideal for bodysurfing the breakers. Oualie Beach has quietly become an international hub for windsurfing, diving and snorkeling over living coral reefs and exotic dive sites.

Before Columbus dropped by on one of his first visits to the new world, Nevis was known as "Oualie," – the island of shimmering water. The magical title may refer to the rejuvenating effect of the waters off the island’s exotic and volcanic black sand beaches to the south. On the other hand, white powdery sands of the northern beaches have their own distinct charm, like the secluded and intimate Lover’s Beach. .
